Brad was extremely upset about my social connection to Darren. He’d walked down the stairs and outside, almost scrambling when he hit the grass, then jogging to the dock in his eagerness to get away from me.

Watching from the upstairs landing, where the beach and dock were visible from the windows that extended from the living room floor to the eaves of the second story, I saw him step onto the boat and unmoor it. A moment later, the sound of the motor filled the quiet air and the boat pulled away from the dock.

I wondered what Skye thought of his behavior. It seemed odd to me that she was my first thought, but because Joe’s death was just below the surface of my mind a great deal of the time, I was constantly speculating about how she might be feeling. Maybe obsessing over her was just a good way to avoid thinking about Darren.

I imagined the Coast Guard finding her lover’s body. I wondered whether she would want to see it, or be too horrified by its imagined condition. I knew that was how I would feel if I were in her position. But didn’t the coroner require someone to identify a body? I shivered, not wanting the composite of gruesome pictures I’d seen on crime shows and in movies over the years to take a solid form in my mind.

I imagined that watching our boat leave the pier must have started her thoughts down a painful pathway. Or maybe not.

Despite her great conversational skills, my impression had been that she lacked depth. Most of her social skills were connected to light subjects, simple chatter and gossip, stories of other people, and getting the people around her to start talking, revealing themselves while she listened and smiled.

I’d known she sent invites to several of my friends on Facebook, they’d messaged me, asking who she was. But Darren? He wouldn’t have shown up at the top of my list because he and I never interacted on Facebook after those first few casual exchanges. We were connected in name only, and now, my slight indiscretion risked exposing everything. Did that mean Skye had scrolled through my entire list of family and friends and sent messages to every single one of them? Who the hell did she think she was?

Maybe it meant nothing. It simply pointed to her frothy view of the world. She seemed to lack solid boundaries and a well-developed understanding of social conventions.

What on earth was she sending messages to Darren for? What did they have to talk about? And why would he respond to her in any meaningful way? Was it possible she knew about Darren and me, after all? I’d been an idiot to assume Joe hadn’t told her he was blackmailing me. Why wouldn’t he?

But she’d acted so supportive, almost eager to back up my story to the Coast Guard and the police, as if she’d wanted to prove she was my friend, not like Joe in any way.
